Need help for the ending of my movie/short story.?

I am in the process of making a GTA San Andreas (computer game) movie, based on a short story my friend wrote, but I want the ending to be happy for the protagonist.

Here is the ending of the story:

A Marine (protagonist) is supposed to be fighting along his men against the Chinese army, when a nuclear missile falls on the them, killing everyone. That is followed by various radio and news reports of a happy ending – the fall of the communist leader of china and the end of the war.

I want the protagonist Marine to survive, and the ending to be at a war memorial, him saluting with other soldiers for the men which have died.

I have had these ideas, but I want other opinions and expanded ideas, as well as anyone seeing if they are good. Also I don’t know if some of these are possible (marked with star *), but I want the Marine to have a heroic ending.

– * The protagonist escaping in a plane or helicopter (can a plane or heli outrun a nuclear missile)
– * Hides in a bunker
– the protagonist is sent home before the final event

I couldn’t think of anything else, but all suggestions/ideas are welcome.

I like the first idea of the protagonist escaping in a helicopter! that would be really cool if you could pull it off.
