More screenwriting advice?

Question by ld12o1: More screenwriting advice?
Now they say that you should write whatever you can right? Well, here’s the thing. Among all of my other ideas and unfinished works, my second script i’ve been working on (my first is done and ready for selling) is most similar to Across the Universe. It’s a musical that uses known rock songs throughout the story.

Now, it’s already hard enough selling a spec but it’s always a big no no to use popular songs before securing the rights. So basically my question is, am I wasting my time with this one? I’ve asked this before and some people have told me to go ahead and do it anyway but since i’m getting closer to finishing and selling my work I want to be sure that even though this requires more faith to sell, will it? Also, (if it helps) these are gonna be my first screenplays, so not really having much of a reputation so far will only make it harder.

Yes, you’re wasting your time. Don’t delete it, but shelve it for now. When and if you make it as a screenwriter, a studio with the money and staff to secure the rights might consider it.

But for now, as a beginner writing entirely on spec, it simply isn’t going to happen, even if your screenplay is genius.

Think hard about budget for spec scripts. How many sets, and how easily secured or created? How many actors? Will period costuming or special effects add to production costs? The most likely way to make a sale is to have a great script which will be cheap to produce.
