I was just watching The Road Warrior, and I noticed that Max has a Ford Falcon with a manual belt-driven blower operated by a button on the shifter. I’ve seen another movie set in Australia where a woman is driving a ’59 Chevy with a manual roots blower operated by a button.

Anyways, I was wondering if there is such a thing because recently I’ve learned a lot about superchargers and a manual one that turns on and off makes no sense to me. First of all, an engine that can handle the boost from a big roots blower needs to have very low compression (7.5-1 to 8-1 or so). And they also need a very large fuel system such as two 600 Holley carburetors. So when the supercharger isn’t activated, the engine will be very sluggish and very over carbureted. Also, you’d need to run premium gas even when the blower isn’t activated because the supercharger would need high octane when it does kick in.

I just don’t get it. They’re basically using superchargers like nitrous systems which seems stupid to me.

Those systems simply do not exist and never have.

With today’s technology, it could be done with a blower, fuel injection and bypass ports even if only vacuum controlled, but nobody seems to care. Especially by using a big 6-71 and dual carbs.
Turbo’s, fuel injection and fully controllable waist gates would be the way to go.

I’ve heard of car’s running for 50 or so miles on the highway after a blower belt flew off just to get home but yea……..
