The theft of a 5th century, 1.2 meters tall Gilded Head of ‘Dipankar Budha’ on February 16th 2002, from its caretaker’s house in Nag Bahal of Patan caused an international furore. It was later revealed that a German art collector had tried to sell it to the Ethnographic Museum in Vienna for 0,000. Due to its timely identification by scholars of the University of Vienna with help from the Buddhist community of Patan, the ‘Dipankar Budha’ was returned in May 2002.
