Is making a copy of a movie that I own illegal? (Not the entire DVD, just the movie part, without “ripping”))?

Question by HTSCP: Is making a copy of a movie that I own illegal? (Not the entire DVD, just the movie part, without “ripping”))?
So here is the scenario.

I have an office with 8 rooms that are used to diagnose and treat patients. In each of these rooms I have a computer workstation and an LCD Tv. The workstation is for our business management software and for us to play our DVDs on the LCD for our patients if they have a treatment time that will take a significant amount of time. We also have television connected to these TVs for patients to choose whether they want to watch TV or watch a DVD from our collection.

Currently we run into the issue of my employees not taking very good care of the DVDs and the result is they end up getting scratched beyond use and I have to buy an additional copy. I want to make backup copies of my movies (just the actual movie part NOT the entire DVD, features, deleted scenes, etc) and keep them on my networks server so that I can access them over the network on my workstations. There are multiple hardware devices out there that will allow me to make a copy of the movie the same as a VCR would record a television feed (via composite cable, etc). Keep in mind that in no way would these movies be distributed either online or to my patients. They would only be able to watch them on the television while they’re being treated (and most of the time the max amount of time a patient would be viewing is about 45 minutes so not even the full feature).

Would this be considered illegal and would I face prosecution if I did this?

NO it isn’t illegal as long as you keep it in a private part of your network and you don’t share anywhere else other than your organisation. You can also Make a full copy of your DVD and use that instead of using the original.
