I want to make sure I’m covered legally for showing a movie clip at public event.

contact the publisher of the movie, i think they are the ones who control the copyright. you’ll probably have to write them an official letter describing why and how you want to show the movie clip.
they can either give you written permission to show the clip or they can refuse you.
