Question by Nikki T: How would a company obtain the legal rights to sell movie stills?
What sort of steps does a company have to take to sell movie stills? Would there be a way to choose your own frames of the movie to make stills from? Could you get permission depending on the particular movie, or is there an encompassing law that would make that difficult. Would it be terribly expensive, even if the stills are from independent films? If so, about how expensive?

If you can answer any of these questions, the help would be greatly appreciated. It would even be great to just be pointed somewhere where I could find information on this subject.

Broadly, you need permission from the owner of the copyright. Generally speaking, that’d be the studio.

There are other approaches, though. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tele-snaps and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use for more information.
