How do I get a job in film making?

Question by Melly: How do I get a job in film making?
I am interested in film making, preferably backstage working with cameras and the crew, but I am very shy and can barely even speak up when I am talking to my own family. Anyway, I am interested in all film making after watching behind the scenes of ‘Merlin’, so if anyone knows if there are jobs for people who are shy in the movie making business, I am always told I have a very polite phone voice so even if it’s booking things like locations or even helping actors with their lines or something, like an assistant type thing. Please, any advise or help would be a huge help. Thank you.

I’m not bashing you but brace yourself.

You’re fascinated after watching behind the scenes of ‘Merlin’ because it all seems fantasy-like. If you’re shy and introverted then the real world is a scary place. You’re fearful of taking chances, being bold or speaking your mind publicly. But movies… wow, there’s a fun place of imagination! You get to work in a dream world of mystical things with creative people and it looks so wonderful. So safe. So unlike the real world. So different from the real world, especially the everyday working world. Like a dream of what you might wish the real world could be like.

Sorry but making movies is a business. A business about profit. Sure they’re selling fantasy, creativity and imagination but that’s as far as it goes. It is long hours of hard work and a very tough, dog-eat-dog, competitive business. If you are truly serious, you will want to go to film school and get your degree. At least that will point you into the right direction and help you get exposure to what you might want to do. Who knows? Maybe you’re a brilliant writer and don’t know it. Maybe you’re a shy actor who hasn’t come out of their shell. Maybe you’re a diligent location scout who has a photographic memory and pays attention to every inconceivable detail so someone else doesn’t have to. Maybe you’re a key grip or love special effects designs. Maybe you’re a carpenter and enjoy set design or model making. Maybe you’re a graphics wiz and would be a computer graphics animator. Or maybe the business is cold, ugly and full of people who will eat you alive or walk all over you until you run away. Only you can find the answer and THAT is your personal movie theme. Struggle and triumph against all odds to achieve a deeply rooted ambition. Good Luck
