How can I make my computer play the high quality avi files?

Question by Mr. Jackson: How can I make my computer play the high quality avi files?
My computer has a RAM of 192 MB which is too much less to play avi files of higher quality, 640 x 480 or above (the movie just looks like a picture slide-show) , also it takes hours for me to convert a movie to lower resolution. How can I speed up my PC without changing any hardware? No matter if the programs other than that avi player slows down. Is there any specific software I can use for it?

Buy a new computer. 192 MB of RAM is just too outdated
