He Who Was Known By The Color Of His Tights?

Question by kavekarst: He Who Was Known By The Color Of His Tights?
The early story’s are obsessed by his clothing. He &
his men had an outerwear described in tales as a kind
of striped bright wrap the same color as his tights. He
had headgear, mantles, kirtles, coats, breeches, shirts,
six different colors of cloth & in one tale pretends to be
a draper so he can sell the King 123 feet of cloth. His
name is associated with color of his tights, the most
expensive cloth for the period, dyed using kermes
(Kermes ilicis), being the dried bodies of the female
shield louse. So, yes, he was a louse too or so said
his enemy. His men wore a Graine, being blue dye
made from woad & overdyed with yellow, that after
1460 included use of hoods. Some historians credit
him as a champion of emerging middle classes but
that isn’t how Hollywood wrote the scripts.
