Dell Enters the Tablet Market With “Streak”

Dell announced Tuesday it will enter the tablet market this summer with its new Streak device. The Streak tablet is much smaller than its iPad counterpart, though larger than your typical smartphone. Its functionality and user experience uniquely positions it among its peers — and might attract new consumers to the tablet market.

Dell’s Streak tablet is geared towards active content producers while the iPad is designed for entertainment, or passive consumption (think app games, movies, web browsing, etc). “The iPad is the device that our parents will use,”

Consider the amount of devices an Apple fanboy lugs around. Of course you need a desktop or MacBook laptop, an iPhone and now an iPad tablet? That’s three expensive pieces of technology. The iPad isn’t a substitute for either desktop or laptop computer — used for work — or smartphone — used for voice and text communicating. It’s for entertainment: playing apps, watching video, light email communication, etc. The Streak, on the other hand, could eliminate the need for a smartphone.

The Streak tablet is an upgrade for the standard. An average smartphone screen is around 3″ making it difficult to use for business or entertainment. Expanding the screen several inches provides more functionality and entertainment

real estate, without sacrificing the potability and the communication capabilities of a smartphone (think emailing, blogging, voice, etc).

The Streak is portable like a smartphone but provides the content producing capabilities of a computer. Unlike its counterparts, Streak users have voice, video recording and image capturing capabilities with a larger display than typical smartphones. In fact, it’s just slightly larger than a smartphone (Blackberry Storm has a 3.5″ display) with a 5″ screen versus the iPad’s 9.5″ display.

Directionally, Dell’s strategy is spot on. It’s not parroting Apple’s iPad to capture a slice of its audience. Instead, it’s going in a completely different direction. Offering portability and…
