Copyright needed for Movie Poster on product for commercial use?

Question by JT: Copyright needed for Movie Poster on product for commercial use?
I have an idea for commercial use, making money. For example If i wanted to make a product that utilized the movie poster from a theatrical release and place it on a product, would i need to get permission to use that image? The copyright website seemed a little vague on if i was using the image and selling a product using that image. IE: T-shirt with movie poster? Tagline? would i need permission to use that? Many products are on the internet use logos, photos from movie…do they all have permission? Any Help where to start or would i need a copyright lawyer if i was to make money on a product. It seems I would most likely need to start seeking out copyright permission, correct?

The short answer to your question is yes, you will need permission.

When intellectual property – such as a name, logo or design, is copyrighted, the entire piece becomes copyrighted, and no piece of that property can be used without the expressed, written permission of the copyright holder. Most copyright holders will be reticent to release permission, as it sets a bad precedent for them. It is much easier for them to just say no.
