Can anyone recommend me some good, but relatively cheap, video editing software?

Question by : Can anyone recommend me some good, but relatively cheap, video editing software?
I was planning on making both home videos and perhaps a little Machinima, nothing too serious, but I don’t really have any decent video editing software. The Movie Maker on my PC is completely terrible, and I don’t have a Mac – and therefore, no iMovie. Can anyone recommend me some decent video editing software that won’t cost me too much money? I was thinking about Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD, but I did some googling and found a bunch of other cheap programs. I’d really, really appreciate it if someone with more experience would recommend me some software. Thanks.
