EPISODE SYNOPSIS: Doug Schultz joins BYOD to discuss an often-overlooked and elegaically creative chapter of the Holocaust. “Defiant Requiem,” shows how the residents of a ghetto in WWII managed to create art under the most horrendous circumstances, while waiting to be shipped away to death camps by their Nazi oppressors. Discussing the history of the event, as well as the filming, and working with the Defiant Requiem Foundation, Doug leaves us with a tremendously moving story of dancing under the sword of Damocles. GUEST BIO: Doug Shultz has been making award-winning documentary films for over a decade, on subjects ranging from history to science to the environment. He recently wrote, produced and directed the Peabody Award-winning film Silence of the Bees, which also garnered four Emmy nominations, and he produced and directed the Emmy-winning series CIA Confidential for National Geographic. Other recent films include the Nature specials Cuba: The Accidental Eden and The Loneliest Animals. DEFIANT REQUIEM is his first feature film.
