‘Blue Valentine’: Portrait of a relationship’s ups and downs

Human evolution mural at Dover High School
make a movie script
Mural and photograph courtesy Zach Strausbaugh, former student in the Dover school district in Pennsylvania. Mural was based on graphics in National Geographic Magazine. Apparently, the school janitor (Larry Reeser) burned it one night. It is likely that this mural, and its burning, sparked the school board to devise its anti-evolution stance. Some details at

And now Paramount is making a movie on the whole affair. I think it would be truly grand to show a mural facsimile burn while the janitor and the school board members (I gather 2 were present) watched it burn. But I don’t think many people know about this mural, so it probably won’t make it into the script unless the writer happens to find this page. If you’re good friends with Ron Nyswaner, please send him the URL. And tell him that a great title would be, "Inherit the Bill". Nyswaner is from Clarksville, PA, and seems to have a pro-supernatural view on life.

If you are a public school science teacher, have your class construct a mural like this one, and hang it in your school’s hallway or lobby for the benefit of all. Projects like this combine art, science, and collaboration, and are appropriate for kindergarteners as well as high school students.

Another way to explore human origins is to have your students produce a "tree" version that more accurately shows our relationships to extinct and extant primates and hominids, rather than the "linear progression" style as shown in the image above. Here are some examples I found using Google’s image search:

If your class completes such a project, please send me a photograph and I’ll post it here. And if you’re not a teacher, but engage in educational street art or murals, please consider the above as a theme for your next project. Or if you work at a zoo, consider a mural like the above for your primate house hallway. And send me a photograph.

Michelle Williams needs to make a movie that doesn’t have a dog tragedy in it, and she needs to make a movie where she doesn’t look like the weight of the world is crushing her soul.
