make a movie script

Sylvain Chomet with the EIFF’s Hannah McGill on stage at the Festival Theatre before the opening night gala movie of the film fest, Chomet’s wonderful The Illusionist, based on an unfilmed Jacques Tati script, partly set in a beautifully done 50s Edinburgh (Chomet worked on the film in a studio in the city too) and his first animated feature film since the brilliant Belleville Rendezvous.

The film was as lovely as I hoped, although I was less impressed with the venue – very uncomfortable old seats and since it is a theatre with the regular ‘fan’ array of seating and not straight line seats like a cinema it means sitting at a bit of an angle to the digital screen they had put in, so the side of the screen furthest away was skewed a bit. Didn’t spoil it, thankfully, but still would have been better in an actual cinema, I think. Still having it in a large theatre did make for a great launch venue (and presumably more seats available for the audience).

Hopefully the Illusionist will be on general release in the UK later this year, highly recommended, especially if you know Edinburgh: www.imdb.com/title/tt0775489/
