1) Okay well that completely depends on the severity of the psychiatric problem. In the case of “A Beautiful Mind”, I would say absolutely he should have taken his meds. I understand that in his particular situation, the drugs may have clouded his mind to the point that he felt zombie-like, and could no longer function as an intellectual or a human being. With a child in the picture, honestly, if the problems are that severe, yes, Nash should have been taking his meds, or removed himself from the house.

2) Again, it depends on the severity and type of psychological problems we’re discussing. If it’s nothing more than anxiety or slight depression, then I think an individual would be lucid enough to make basic judgement calls. If we’re talking severe (type 1) bi-polar disorder, borderline personality disorder, or schizophrenia; then no, one’s judgement would definitely have to be called into question.

I think people try to lump mental illness into one big category in many cases, when it is certainly quite the opposite. There are varying degrees of psychosis, that require different levels of care. Proper diagnoses is critical in ALL cases of metal illness; both to protect the patient and those around them….and to spare them from undue humiliation or disrespect, which honestly, they shouldn’t have to deal with under any circumstances. You really can’t make a blanket statement regarding all people with mental illness. It’s still highly misunderstood and feared in this country, and those who think all situations are the same should do a bit of research. Just my input. Great question though. Cheers. 🙂
