2009 Oktoberfest :: UST Stop #7

Coverage of the two day skimboarding event in Newport Beach, California. The event took place in October, 2009. Brad Domke, the points leader going into the event, was upset by Paulo Prietto and Sam Stinnett in a particularly tough second round heat on day one. After his exit, all eyes turned to Bill Bryan who would now walk away with the title unless Sam Stinnett, Morgan Just, Brandon Sears, Paulo Prietto or James Lovett could stop him. Bill Bryan squared off against James Lovett, Jake Stinnett and Tim Fulton an all out battle to make it out of the quarter final round. In the end, James Lovett won the heat handily while Bill took second beating Jake by only .5 points on a single score sheet. During the same round, top runner Paulo Prietto was upset by Brandon Sears and Sam Stinnett in a grueling 12 minute heat. Complicated math led most to believe that Morgan Just could still take the title from Bill with a 1st place finish. But in reality, by making it to the semi-final round with Paulo and Brad out of the picture, Bill had secured the title. The battle was on, however, for spots two through seven, and the riders didn’t have time to crunch any numbers. The final approached fast and after twelve minutes of intense competition, Sam Stinnett emerged the victor for the first time in professional competition and launched himself from sixth place in the standings to second.
